Chris619 on IRC ask me to write up a tutorial about customizing windows more than MS allows. I'll try my best. Here's a shot of my win2k. Lets start with the taskbar. All i did was make it twice as high as normal. And make the quick launch icons in large mode. Which is easy to do right click on a blank area of the quick launch bar and in view select "large". And I also changed the icons. Which can be found on www.deskmod.com And other places which are linked from Deskmod. I've also gotten icons from places i don't remember so if there's anything you can't find you can email me and I'll email them to you. (Sorry for the icon authors I would give you credit if I could remember who made these icons.)
To get the taskbar transparent with the different start button. I used a program called T-Clock which can be found here. It has options to make the taskbar flat and the start button flat, systray flat too. It also has other options to sync your clock with a NTP server. I just use T-Clock for transparency, flat tool bar, the start button, and the custom format for clock. There's also another program I have running which you can not see called PowerMenu. Which lets you change transparency of programs and priority on the fly. Check it out here. Since Win2k does not have it's own theme engine, and Stardock's Windowsblind is too bloated for me. I've been using 3Dcc for the color scheme. 3Dcc can be found here. The schemes can be found here.Found another link for 3dcc themes here. From the screenshot I'm using halcyon scheme which can be found on that page. And the Icons are BlockOS Additions which is here. To use it you'll also need Stardock's IconPackager which is linked from that page. It's a good program because it changes all your icons at once, but it is shareware. There's a free program out there called IPhile which is very good and it's free but you'll have to make your own package and apply it to windows. So it's your choice to pick one or you can change them one by one within windows. I know that BlockOS has been around for a long time but it's still good and I don't really like the OSX types of icons out there these days. I don't know why everyone is fixing their PC to look like OSX. The curors I'm using is called BlockCR made by Maur. They can be found on his page here. He has a lot of cool cursors.
For the right click to have a custom icon I used Byblos.dll It's hosted by virtualplastic.net. Which is an awesome site for tweaking windows, except it's not for newbies and requires a lot of reading, learning by mistakes. You should try reading everything first before attemping to reshack a file. They also have another sub site WinT which is only a week old. WinT's site is more advance than regular tweaks. These sites require a program called ResHack. It's good for modifying resources of win32 programs. If you use trillian there's a skin based on the classic VS for WinXP which i'm using found here preview And to get my folder to be a system's folder it's just a reghack found here. Which allows you to link a folder to that folder that shows up on "My Computer" so it's easier to get access to it, and you can hide it in some abstract folder hidden deep inside your harddrive. like x:\winnt\system32\dllcache\your folder\ no one would ever look in there. I have no idea what else I did to my computer. And if you are stuck in WinXp there's this VS that I like called Classix Alright I'm tired now of coding this page by hand. Just to prove it. Next time I'll talk about MMC hacking for win2k, ie making it shut down in less than 5 sec. and other junk. And I'll get into Litestep which is the best GUI mod if you'r in windows. It's faster, smaller, takes less ram than explorer. And it's totaly customizeable. There's no limits to what you can do in LiteStep. There's even a theme I made awhile back which i never released to the public.
